Autumn Bed Inputs: Identify, Assess, Then Apply
Identify compost organisms versus jumping-worm soil, test whether compost is finished, then sheet-compost or incorporate only when soil moisture is right.
Fallen leaves and bin contents do not automatically belong on a raised bed. Identify what is in the pile, assess whether the compost is finished, then apply it only when the soil is ready — or protect the topsoil with mulch or a cover crop instead.

Ordinary compost organisms are decomposers
University of Maryland Extension’s how to make compost at home names bacteria, fungi, and other microbes as the key composting organisms. Larger helpers include earthworms, slugs, snails, millipedes, sow bugs, ants, and various insect larvae. They bite and chew coarse material, which increases the surface area for microbes. Maryland Extension: do not be alarmed if you find them in the pile. Their presence is not, by itself, a reason to empty the bin.
Jumping worms are a different problem
Invasive jumping worms are not those ordinary decomposers. Maryland Extension’s invasive jumping worms page describes identification and limits:
- Castings on the soil surface can look like spent coffee grounds or ground meat.
- The worms thrash wildly and move in a snake-like manner.
- They live at the surface of soil and leaf litter and do not provide deep aeration.
- Prevention includes making compost at home, inspecting potted plants, and buying bare-root plants when possible.
- There are currently no chemical controls. Physical removal is the recommended response if they are detected.
Do not treat a Maryland occurrence map as the viewer’s location. Use the identification signs on the soil in front of you.
Is the compost finished?
Apply only compost that has completed the process. University of Minnesota Extension’s too much compost and manure checklist:
- Texture should resemble soil, with no chunks of undecomposed organic matter.
- Temperature should be more or less ambient. Compost over 100°F is likely not finished.
Oregon State’s how to use compost (EM-9308) adds the look and smell tests. High-quality compost looks like dark topsoil with a light, crumbly structure and smells earthy like forest soil. Foul, ammonia, or sulfur smells mean the process is not complete. Large particles, rocks, trash, and debris should not be in compost destined for vegetable beds.
Worm activity in a working pile is not a finished-compost test. Ordinary decomposers can be present long before the material looks, smells, and sits at ambient temperature.
Sheet-compost shredded leaves on an empty bed
Maryland Extension describes sheet composting as a way to make a new bed in late summer for planting the following spring:
- Mow or cut grass and weeds as low as possible.
- Place overlapping sections of newspaper or unwaxed corrugated cardboard over the entire area.
- Cover with 8 inches of compost, aged manure, shredded leaves, or grass clippings (avoid weeds with seedheads and herbicide-treated turf).
- In spring, plant directly without rototilling.
Oregon State’s no-turn cold composting (EM-9480) also uses overlapped newspaper or cardboard as a sheet-mulch layer. None of the fetched pages stated that whole leaves form a wet mat, so that contrast is not used here. The sourced sequence is shredded leaves (or the other listed materials) over cardboard or newspaper.
Incorporate finished compost only when soil moisture is right
Minnesota Extension’s living soil / healthy garden rate for flowers and vegetables is 1 to 2 inches of compost incorporated 6 to 8 inches deep.
Oregon State EM-9032: work the soil only when moisture conditions are correct. Tilling wet clay can destroy structure. Use the ball test above. EM-9032 also places 1–2 inches of finished compost just before planting, after other amendments have had time to settle.
If you are not adding compost
Minnesota Extension: the top few inches of soil hold organisms, organic matter, and nutrients. Mulch or cover crops protect that topsoil from erosion and add organic matter as they break down. Oregon State EM-9032 notes that mulching prevents most annual weeds from emerging.

Identify, assess, then apply. Use your local average first frost date and current soil conditions as the deciding inputs. A frost average is not a forecast, and a hardiness zone is not an application calendar.
