Volunteer plants are the seedlings nobody put on the calendar. A tomato pops up near the compost. Dill appears between carrots. A little husked fruit plant shows up by the fence because a bird, last year’s harvest, or a half-finished compost pile moved seed for you. Sometimes that’s a gift. Sometimes it’s a weed wearing a cute disguise.

The trick is not to romanticize every mystery seedling. Keep the ones you can identify, place safely, and actually use. Pull the rest while they’re small.

Volunteer plants are not always “free plants”

A volunteer plant is any plant growing where you didn’t intentionally sow or transplant it. The seed may have come from dropped fruit, bird droppings, wind, mulch, compost, livestock bedding, or a plant that went to seed last season.

Free is tempting. But free can still cost space, water, nutrients, sunlight, and attention.

A volunteer tomato in a walking path is not a blessing if it blocks the hose every morning. A volunteer squash may be diseased, crossed with another cucurbit, or just poorly placed. A volunteer dill plant beside cabbage might be welcome if you’re feeding swallowtail caterpillars. The same dill in a carrot row can become a mess if you’re trying to weed tiny seedlings.

The practical question is simple: does this plant earn its spot?

The simple rule for volunteer plants: identify first, then decide

Here’s the rule I’d use for a home garden:

Keep a volunteer only if you can identify it with confidence, it’s growing in a workable place, and it won’t create a bigger problem later.

That sounds strict. Good. Mystery plants deserve suspicion until proven useful.

Pull immediately if any of these are true

Pull the plant while it’s small if:

  • You can’t identify it.
  • It resembles a poisonous plant or a known invasive plant in your area.
  • It’s growing against a house foundation, under a shrub, inside a vegetable crown, or in a path you need.
  • It has disease symptoms such as mosaic mottling, severe distortion, wilting, or suspicious spotting.

  • It’s a heavy seeder you already struggle to control.
  • It’s crowding a planned crop.

Small plants are easy to remove. Big plants become negotiations.

Consider keeping it if all of these are true

A volunteer may be worth keeping if:

  • You can identify it at seedling and mature stages.
  • It has enough room without shading or tangling your planned crops.
  • It supports pollinators or beneficial insects.
  • It produces something edible, ornamental, or useful.
  • You can remove flowers or seed heads before it spreads.
  • You are willing to thin extra seedlings later.

And yes, sometimes the best compromise is transplanting. Many volunteer flowers and herbs move well when young. Others hate disturbance. Dill, for example, forms a taproot and usually resents transplanting once it gets going. Tiny seedlings have a better chance than lanky ones.

Common volunteer plants worth recognizing

Some volunteer plants show up so often that they’re worth learning on sight. These four are good examples because they land in different categories: edible fruit, herb, self-seeding flower, and spreading perennial.

Groundcherry volunteer plants

Groundcherry is a Physalis species, related to tomatillo and tomato. The common garden type is often sold as Physalis pruinosa, though names in seed catalogs vary. It produces small yellow-orange fruits inside papery husks.

Volunteer groundcherries often appear where ripe fruit dropped the year before. Birds and compost can move them too. Seedlings may look like small tomato-family plants: soft green leaves, slightly fuzzy growth, and a branching habit as they mature. The lantern-like husk is the giveaway later.

Why keep one? Groundcherries can be productive, and they’re fun if you like sweet-tart fruit. They can also fill awkward corners where a smaller crop would be fiddly.

But there are real cautions.

Groundcherry belongs to the nightshade family. Do not eat the leaves. Do not eat green, unripe fruit. Extension and horticultural references commonly warn that unripe fruit and vegetative parts of Physalis can contain toxic compounds. Ripe fruit is usually harvested after it turns yellow-orange and drops inside a dry husk, depending on the species and variety.

Also, volunteer groundcherries can sprawl. A plant that looked harmless in May may be flopping into basil by August. If it’s growing in a narrow raised bed, give it a cage, prune around it, or pull it. No guilt.

One more wrinkle: if you grew multiple Physalis types nearby, seedlings may not be identical to last year’s plant. Your mileage may vary.

Dill volunteer plants

Dill is one of the classic self-seeding herbs. The University of Minnesota Extension describes dill as an annual herb that can reseed when seed heads are allowed to mature. That tracks with what gardeners commonly see: feathery seedlings scattered near last year’s umbels.

Young dill has fine, threadlike foliage and a distinct dill scent when gently rubbed. It grows upright, then sends up umbrella-shaped flower clusters. Pollinators visit the flowers, and black swallowtail caterpillars may feed on the foliage.

A volunteer dill plant can be useful near cucumbers, cabbage-family crops, or flowers where you want beneficial insects. It’s also handy if you cook with fresh dill or make pickles.

But dill is not tidy.

It can shade small seedlings, lean after storms, and seed around heavily if you let every umbel mature. It also doesn’t like being moved once the taproot develops. If the volunteer is exactly where you don’t want it, pull it young and sow dill where it belongs.

In a planned bed, leave one or two strong plants and remove the rest. That gives you herb harvests and flowers without turning the bed into a dill nursery.

Black-eyed Susan volunteer plants

Black-eyed Susan usually refers to Rudbeckia hirta or related Rudbeckia species. Many types are short-lived perennials or biennials, and they often self-seed if flower heads remain through fall and winter.

Seedlings may form rough, hairy leaves in a low rosette before sending up flowering stems. Mature flowers have yellow to orange rays around a dark central cone.

These volunteer plants can be worth keeping near vegetable beds because they feed pollinators and other beneficial insects. They also bring structure to a mixed edible-ornamental garden without much fuss.

But they aren’t tiny. Depending on the species and cultivar, black-eyed Susan can crowd shorter vegetables and herbs. They may also reseed more than expected in loose soil.

There’s also an identification issue: young Rudbeckia seedlings can look like several other fuzzy-leaved plants. Don’t assume every rough rosette is black-eyed Susan. Wait for more identifying features if the plant is in a safe holding spot, or compare it with a reliable field guide.

Best use: keep volunteers at bed edges, pollinator strips, or near paths where their height won’t smother crops. If one pops up in the middle of a carrot row, it’s probably not the chosen one.

Yarrow volunteer plants

Yarrow, Achillea millefolium, is a tough perennial with ferny leaves and flat-topped flower clusters. White yarrow is common, while garden cultivars may bloom in yellow, pink, red, or other tones.

It can spread by seed and rhizomes. That second part matters. A volunteer yarrow seedling is one thing; an established patch can creep.

Yarrow’s fine foliage is usually easy to recognize once you know it. Crushed leaves often have a strong herbal scent. The plant is drought tolerant once established and attractive to small beneficial insects.

So, keep it? Maybe.

Yarrow can be useful near a vegetable garden margin, in a pollinator bed, or in a low-water planting. It’s less ideal inside a high-production vegetable bed where roots, reseeding, and spreading crowns complicate crop rotation.

If yarrow volunteers inside a raised bed, think hard before letting it stay. A perennial that spreads in a bed used for annual vegetables can become annoying fast. Put it at the edge, or pot it up while young and move it to a permanent pollinator area.

Volunteer plants in raised beds need stricter rules

Raised beds make volunteer plants look more charming than they are. Loose soil, compost, and regular watering create perfect germination conditions. That’s great for lettuce. Also for every seed that survived winter.

The problem is that raised beds are usually limited space. A single volunteer groundcherry can occupy the footprint of several pepper plants. A yarrow clump can interfere with annual planting. Dill can cast shade over slow spring crops.

If you use a square-foot layout, intensive spacing, or narrow paths, decide early. The longer you wait, the harder it gets to remove the volunteer without disturbing nearby roots.

Compost is a volunteer plant factory

Compost can spread volunteer plants when seeds survive the pile. This is especially common in cool compost piles that never reach sustained hot-composting temperatures.

Tomato seeds are famous for this. Squash too. Groundcherry and tomatillo seeds can also pass through compost and sprout wherever finished compost is spread.

Hot composting can kill many weed and crop seeds, but only if the pile reaches proper temperatures throughout and is turned so outer material moves into the hot center. Many home compost piles don’t get there consistently. That doesn’t make the compost bad. It just means mystery seedlings are part of the deal.

To reduce volunteers from compost:

  • Don’t compost ripe seedy fruits from plants you don’t want reseeding.
  • Bury fresh kitchen scraps deep in the active pile.
  • Turn the pile so edges heat more evenly.
  • Cure finished compost, then skim or hoe seedlings before spreading.
  • Use compost as mulch only where you can weed easily.

And if volunteers still appear? Normal. Seeds are stubborn.

Keep vs pull: a practical decision chart for volunteer plants

Use this when you’re standing there with a trowel and a suspicious seedling.

1. Can you identify it confidently?
No? Pull it, or leave it only in a safe, unused spot until you can identify it. Don’t eat it.

2. Is it safe?
If the plant could be toxic, invasive, or a noxious weed, remove it. Check local extension guidance if you’re unsure. County extension offices are underrated for this.

3. Is it in the right place?
A good plant in a bad place is still a problem. Paths, bed corners, irrigation lines, and crop rows are not neutral spaces.

4. Will it compete with a planned crop?
Vegetables need light and airflow. Crowded beds dry unevenly and can invite disease issues.

5. Will it go to seed everywhere?
Dill, yarrow, black-eyed Susan, cilantro, arugula, lettuce, calendula, borage, and many others can self-sow generously. That may be welcome. Or not.

6. Do you actually want the harvest or flowers?
This one sounds obvious, but gardeners keep plants out of curiosity and then resent them for months. If you don’t eat groundcherries, don’t give one prime pepper space.

7. Can you manage it?
Staking, thinning, deadheading, pruning, and pulling seedlings are all labor. Small labor, sure. Still labor.

If a plant passes every question, it earns a chance.

When volunteer vegetables are risky

Some volunteer vegetables are more predictable than others.

Self-pollinating crops, such as many tomatoes, often produce seedlings similar to the parent if the original plant was open-pollinated. But hybrid tomatoes can produce unpredictable offspring. They may still be edible. They may be bland, late, small, or oddly shaped. Take this with a grain of salt, because genetics can surprise you.

Squash, pumpkins, gourds, cucumbers, and melons deserve extra caution. Cucurbits cross in specific groups, and volunteer seedlings may not match last year’s crop. A small amount of chaos can be useful

A perfectly sterile garden is not the goal. Self-seeding plants can create habitat, feed insects, protect soil, and save you some sowing. The best gardens often have a little looseness around the edges.

Edges are the magic word.

Let volunteer plants live where they help: pollinator strips, herb corners, fence lines, spare containers, perennial borders, and wide path edges. Be much pickier inside production beds.
