Raised Garden Bed Soil: The Right Mix Recipe
Choose raised-bed soil from the bed's drainage and root space. Compare topsoil and compost blends, calculate fill volume, and avoid unnecessary amendments.
The right soil for a raised bed depends on what is underneath it. An open-bottom bed over usable ground behaves differently from a planter with a solid bottom. Start there, then calculate the amount of fill. There is no single recipe that has been shown here to outyield every other mixture.
Start with the bed, not a bag of amendments

Putting a frame around poor drainage does not automatically fix it. Likewise, adding fertilizer will not correct a bed that stays waterlogged. If the bed sits on a roof, balcony, deck, or other structure, obtain a load assessment before ordering soil.
What Extension guidance says about topsoil and compost
The University of Minnesota suggests roughly one-half to two-thirds topsoil with one-third to one-half plant-based compost for raised beds. Its guidance also distinguishes raised-bed fill from potting mix and cautions against excessive compost or manure. Read its raised-bed guidance in the context of your site and local soil.

These are different starting situations, not competing promises of a perfect mix. Ask a local supplier what is in its “raised-bed mix,” whether the compost is finished, and whether it has test results for the material. A name on the delivery ticket is not a recipe.
Questions to ask before a bulk order
- What proportions of topsoil and compost are in the blend?
- Is the compost plant-based, manure-based, or a mixture?
- Is there a recent analysis for pH, soluble salts, and nutrients?
- Is the material screened, and are there restrictions on its intended use?
- Is delivery charged separately, and how much is the minimum order?
- Where can the truck unload without blocking access to the garden?
For a small bed, bagged raised-bed mix may be convenient. For several beds, compare the total delivered cost of bulk fill with the number of bags actually required. The cheaper unit price is only useful if the material is suitable and you can handle it.
Calculate fill before comparing prices
For a rectangular bed, use the inside length and width, and the depth of soil you intend to add:

Those figures are geometry, not a supplier quote. Rounded corners, sloping sides, space left below the rim, and settling change the order. Calculate each shape separately when comparing Vego and Birdies beds.
A price example you can fill in: if your usable volume is 32 cubic feet, divide that by the stated bag volume to find the bag count. Multiply by today’s bag price, then compare with a delivered bulk quote. Include handling tools or delivery charges only when you need them.
Tall beds: lower fill is a separate decision
Logs, branches, and other decomposing material can reduce the amount of purchased soil in a tall bed, but they also settle. They are not an instant substitute for a suitable growing layer. Avoid treating an arbitrary percentage of raw wood or unfinished compost as a universal recipe.

Maintain the soil by evidence
Record what you add. If growth is weak, check water, light, roots, and soil before buying another amendment. A garden soil test can identify nutrient and pH problems; it does not diagnose every disease or tell you how well a bed drains.
Do not automatically add manure, lime, phosphorus, or an inoculant every spring. When a test recommends a change, calculate the amount for the actual bed area and follow the product directions. A bed with adequate nutrients may need better watering or drainage rather than another bag of fertilizer.
What to buy, and what can wait
The first purchases are suitable fill and a way to get it into the bed. A soil test, measuring tape, and a simple record of amendments can be more useful than several specialty additives. Buy a particular fertilizer or amendment only after identifying its job.
